Opportunities, Challenges and Experiences
The ESL (English as a Second Language) program is designed to enhance students' English skills for effective communication in American society and successful engagement in academic courses conducted in English.
The ESL program offers four levels of English instruction, covering listening and speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. Placement in the appropriate class level is determined based on a placement test, oral interview, and a week of instruction with the instructor.
Additional elective courses are available, including pronunciation, American culture, current events, TOEFL preparation, and mission English. The ESL instruction is delivered by dedicated, experienced instructors with educational degrees, using culturally relevant content.
With a typical student-to-teacher ratio of about 10:1, students receive personalized learning opportunities. The ESL program offered by MIRI is well-structured, and we encourage many to take advantage of this program as they seek ESL opportunities.
