
A record-breaking heatwave that began in the central United States this summer has spread to the Northeast. According to CNN and The Washington Post, as of July 15 local time, over 100 million people in the U.S. are under heatwave advisories. CNN reported that 146.3 million people across the country are under heat advisories or warnings, while The Washington Post stated that approximately 100 million people in the Northeast alone are affected by heatwave alerts. Las Vegas, Nevada has been experiencing extreme heat for over a week, with temperatures reaching as high as 49 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit) on July 7. NBC reported, 'Las Vegas Valley has turned into a giant oven,' noting that authorities have closed outdoor pools and museums, and streets have become so hot they could fry an egg.
Recent reports estimate that at least 38 deaths in six states including Nevada and Texas are likely due to heat-related illnesses. This week, the heatwave has spread to the East Coast, with highest-level heat advisories issued in Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, eastern North Carolina, and southeastern Virginia. Heat advisories have also been issued in New York and Boston, where temperatures reached 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) and heat indices climbed to 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) on the same day."
