As students return to school, health experts are reminding parents that an overloaded backpack can pose unnecessary risks to children's health. With many students now carrying laptops, tablets, textbooks, sports equipment, and personal items each day, backpacks have become significantly heavier than in previous years.

Pediatric specialists emphasize that there is no single weight limit suitable for every child. Rather than relying on a fixed percentage of body weight, parents should watch for signs such as leaning forward while walking, difficulty carrying the backpack, or shoulder straps leaving deep marks. These indicators suggest that the load may be excessive and should be reduced before discomfort or injury develops.

Medical professionals also warn that heavy backpacks can increase the severity of injuries if a child trips or falls. They recommend packing only the materials needed for the day's classes and removing unnecessary items that often accumulate over time.

Educators echo this advice, noting that as digital learning expands, many students carry both electronic devices and traditional school supplies, while older students often add personal belongings that contribute little to their academic needs. Regularly reviewing backpack contents can significantly reduce unnecessary weight.

Experts further recommend choosing a backpack with two wide padded shoulder straps, multiple compartments for balanced weight distribution, and a waist or chest strap for additional support. Children should wear both shoulder straps and use proper lifting techniques to minimize strain. Backpacks should also be removed while riding in vehicles, as wearing one can interfere with the proper function of a seat belt during an accident.

Although backpacks are an everyday necessity, health professionals say a lighter, well-organized backpack can improve comfort, reduce the risk of injury, and help students begin each school day better prepared to learn.
