As smartphones become an essential part of everyday life, healthcare professionals are warning about the increasing risk of hand and wrist injuries caused by prolonged use.

Commonly known as "Texting Thumb," the condition refers to pain, stiffness, or discomfort in the thumb, fingers, and wrist resulting from repetitive texting, scrolling, and prolonged device use. If left untreated, it may contribute to more serious conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, thumb arthritis, De Quervain's tenosynovitis, and trigger thumb.

Experts recommend reducing continuous screen time by taking regular breaks, changing hand positions, alternating hands while typing, and using voice-to-text features whenever possible. Phone grips or stands can also help reduce strain by distributing the device's weight more evenly.

Simple hand and wrist stretching exercises may relieve discomfort, but persistent pain, numbness, or tingling should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

"Our hands were not designed to use phones all day long," said Dr. Eugene Tsai of Cedars-Sinai Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. "In order for us to use our phones, we have to be kind to our hands."

Practicing healthy smartphone habits can help prevent overuse injuries and protect long-term hand health.
