As the world mourns the passing of Pope Francis at the age of 88, attention has turned once again to the prophecies of 16th-century French astrologer Nostradamus (born Michel de Nostredame), who is said to have predicted the Pope’s death. According to The Economic Times and other international media outlets on April 23, Nostradamus’ 1555 book of prophecies includes a passage stating that “after the death of an aged pontiff, the authority of the papacy will weaken.” This prediction is interpreted as one of Nostradamus’ foretellings for the year 2025. Nostradamus described the pontiff in question as “very elderly,” which many see as a clear reference to Pope Francis, who had been struggling with deteriorating health in recent months before his passing. The prophecy goes on to state, “Upon the death of the aged Pope, a Roman of suitable age will be elected. Though some will claim his authority is diminished, he will serve with vigor for a long time.”

Particularly striking is Nostradamus’ cryptic reference to the Pope’s successor. One passage in the prophecy reads: “A young man of black skin, aided by a great king, shall pass the purse to another of red skin.” This line has sparked wide-ranging interpretations and debate. Some commentators caution against interpreting the phrase “black Pope” literally, suggesting instead that it could be a symbolic reference to a Jesuit leader—the Jesuit order being known for their black clerical attire, and of which Pope Francis was a member. Others believe it could signify a profound transformation in the Catholic Church’s leadership structure. The prophecy also alludes to the potential fall of the “City of Seven Hills,” widely understood to be a reference to Rome and, by extension, the Vatican. This has fueled speculation that the Church may be on the brink of a period of turmoil or significant change.

According to the Vatican, Pope Francis passed away on April 21 at the age of 88. While he had long suffered from respiratory illnesses, the cause of death has been reported as a cerebrovascular condition. In the wake of his death, the Vatican is expected to convene a conclave soon to elect his successor. International media have begun profiling potential candidates for the papacy, with particular focus on the possibility of a non-white successor from Asia or Africa. As the Catholic Church continues to grow in regions like Asia and Africa—following the historic appointment of the first Pope from the Americas—there is intense global interest in whether the Church will once again embrace change in selecting its next leader.
