Planning a trip to the United States? Here are five essential dos and don’ts to help protect yourself during your visit.

1. DO back up your data before traveling.

U.S. authorities may confiscate your phone or other electronic devices if you refuse to unlock them or provide passwords.

2. DO review the contents of your phone before entering the country.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers are legally allowed to search your device.

Make sure only information you’re comfortable sharing remains on your device. For instance, even if you’ve deleted messages critical of the Trump administration, verify they haven’t been saved elsewhere or backed up automatically.

3. DO leave a house key with someone you trust—and memorize their phone number.

If you are detained at the border for an extended period, you may be allowed only one phone call. If your phone is confiscated, you won’t be able to access stored contacts.

4. DO power off all electronic devices before you travel.

Keeping your devices off can help safeguard your privacy until you reach your destination.

5. DO carry enough cash to buy a return flight.

Being financially prepared can demonstrate your intention to return home, which may help during immigration screening.

Euronews has reported that, under shifting U.S. immigration policies, some travelers have been detained at the border for weeks. The fact that such precautions have become necessary paints a sobering picture of the current travel landscape.
